Adding CDs to MusicIP/MusicMagic database after initial validation

I have been unsuccessful in having CDs newly added to a VortexBox Appliance (VBA) update the Current Cache in MusicMagic Server. I must be following the wrong procedure and request advice on what to do.

Here is the steps I used:

. Ripped CD with dBpoweramp to the VBA.

. Validated the file was on the VBA and did tag refinement with Tag&Rename

. Used Squeezebox Server > Settings > Look for new and changed music (found 24 new tracks)

. Used Squeezebox Server > Artists > to verify album is available to play

. Used remote login "service mmserver status" to verify mmserver was running

. Used MusicMagic Server > Refresh Songs
Display showed "Refreshing tracks for a few seconds
(there was no change in Total Songs [41,681] or Mixable songs [41,634]
and Songs to Validate remained at zero.

. Clicked MusicMagic Server > Start Validation
Display showed "Validating tracks for a few seconds
(not long enough to validate 24 tracks.
There was no change in Total, Mixable or Songs to validate.

I must be doing something wrong.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I may have given you bad advice before. Instead of just clicking on "Refresh Songs", I think you need to re-enter the root directory of your music (/storage/music/flac) and click on "Add Music".

After a while, you should see an increase in the total song count, and some new songs to validate. Click on "Start Validation" to initiate the validation process.

When the validation process completes, have SqueezeBoxServer rescan "Look for New and Changed Music". When that completes, you should be able to create MusicIP mixes based on the new songs.

    Hope this works for you.

    Thanks Ron,

Steps 1 & 2 worked fine. "Add Music" was the key.

I did step 3, and the VBA required reboot to regain GUI access. When access was regained, selecting any song, old or new, lacked the "M" option for the MusicIP mix. I suspect that Clear and rescan will restore the MusicIP option. Clear and rescan requires a few hours and is now running. I'l report the results.

You shouldn't have to do a complete clear and rescan of your music library to pick up the MusicIP changes.

The "Look for new and changed music" rescan includes a MusicIP Import step; you can verify this by looking at SBS > Settings > Information > Music Scan Details. The MusicIP Server has to be running for this to work.

I think you ran into some sort of glitch; you shouldn't have to reboot to regain GUI access when you do an SBS library rescan.

If you add more CDs to your collection, I suggest trying the "Look for new and changed music" rescan again in step 3. It should pick up the MusicIP changes as long as the MusicIP Server is running when the rescan occurs. Doing a complete clear and rescan is time-consuming and should not be necessary here.

    Ron,

As you suspected, the clear and rescan did not fix the problem.

    I checked mmserver and got:

    [vortexbox.localdomain ~]# service mmserver status
    MusicIP Server is running

and the clear and rescan reports:

    (41721 of 41721) Complete 01:19:29
    Playlist Scan (2 of 2) Complete 00:00:02
    MusicIP Import (41721 of 41721) Complete 00:36:56
Merge Various Artists (2312 of 2312) Complete 00:00:52
    Artwork Scan (4622 of 4622) Complete 00:21:44
    . . .
The server has finished scanning your music collection.
    Total Time: 02:19:03 (Wednesday, March 24, 2010 / 9:52 AM)

Because my VBA is not the current VBA 1.2-X interim release, I will upgrade to that, and see if MuscIP function is restored. I sure hope this does not lead to additional problems.

    UPDATE:20100324 14:40
upgrade to version 1.2-4 interim release and reboot restored MusicIP function. I have no idea why.

It wasn't the update that cured the MusicIP problem — it was the reboot. I think you could have just restarted SqueezeBox Server to achieve the same result. Next time you run into a MusicIP problem, try that. You can restart SBS via the "Restart SBS" button on the VB GUI System Configuration page, or via

    service squeezeboxserver restart
