Very Impressed - Thanks ! ..Couple of queries

    Hi Andrew,

Installed VortexBox on a mates old pc and it works well, am very impressed - does exactly what I was looking for in terms of a server/NAS. Have a couple of queries

Power Management/WOL - asked this in the previous thread

Hard Drive Size - I'm looking to install as big a hard drive as possible, 500gb if possible, does VortexBox support this or is it all dependant on the hardware ?

    Thanks

    ian

VortexBox is designed with large drive sizes in mind. We use the xfs file system. XFS is designed to work very well with very large files and drive sizes. XFS can support a drive up to 16 exabytes (thats 16 million terabytes) so you should be good for a few years.

In release 0.5 VortexBox now supports drive spanning so if you install three 1TB SATA drives in a system you will have 3TB of continuous storage for your files.

I will try to get WOL working this week.

If your still thinking about the limits of VortexBox in terms of storing music and video “One exabyte is the equivalent of about 50,000 years of DVD quality video”

Good news! I guess the limitation I have is with the hardware, I'll be honest though I don't know much about this - I believe that the hard drive is an IDE drive rather then a SATA drive so not sure on what options that gives me ...one to research

So how would this work on an exsisting system if I now added a second drive for the spanning ? What steps would I have to take to gain the extra storage space for an exsisting system with .5 on it.

As well why would ssh not allow me to logon I cann establish connection but it will not accept password even though it is correct.

And one last questions for today what are the step by steps to change IP.

Andrew if you would like and could compile all of the questions and answers here in the ofrum and answer any other questions I ask I could help you and get a nice set of documentation written for you to post here. I think this would help people alot have a good set of Documentation to refer to for common trouble shooting an configuration questions.

You can make a doc if you want. That would be great. I go over adding a second disk in this doc

    http://vortexbox.org/documentation/how-to-add-a-second-drive-to-your-vortexbox/

For spanning two disks you need two SATA disks. Then you can pick the spanning option on the install menu. Not sure why SSH wouldn't work. If you want to change the IP address the best way is to create a static DHCP lease in your router. This way you won't forget the IP you can always look in your routers DHCP table. If you don't want to do that just type system-config-network on the command line.
