    Rip to FAT32 compatible filenames

I have my vortexbox set up to rip to /storage (the default) and then I later move the directories in music/flac to a different drive (mounted as FAT32) containing the directory tree used by my instance of Squeezebox server. The problem is that there are some filenames (such as Michael Buble, with the accent) and songs with a "?" in the file name that will not copy cleanly to a FAT32 drive.

Is there a way to have vortex rip using filenames compatible with Windows/FAT32 (even though it's ripping to an ext3 partition in actuality) so that I don't have to manually do it when I move the files?

It seems to me the easiest way would be to rip the muisic using EAC on a windows PC then transfer them to the VBox if you wanted them in both places. Or if you only wanted to store them on the windows box, then just put EAC (Exact Audio Copy) on that box and be done with it.

The Vortexbox is a fantastic appliance for storing and serving up music while consuming very little power. It is amazingly easy to use with far more features avaialable through the web interface then I had ever expected. But if you simply need the CD Paranoia capibility (Auto rip with bit checking) you can get that elsewhere.

I use mine because I dont want to have a large full sized computer on all the time simply to listen to my music, so its on all the time. It is even on a shelf about 7-8 feet up so I couldnt turn it on and off easily if I wanted to.

Hmm, EAC is a bit limited as it will only access FreeDB.

EAC will have a problem with 'Various Artists' tpe albums (freedb).

Otherwise what I really LOVE about VB, is its a box, I shove a CD in it, it pops out 6 to 15mins later. Job done.

No menus, no what do I do with this, it just in general works.

If you have a Logitech system it is good.

As to FAT32, move to NTFS?

    Have fun,

Thanks to all. After googling and running into so many corner cases with FAT32 I simply slicked the disk and started over with ext3. Much happier now.

On a related note, is there an easy way to change the default storage directory in Vortexbox to something other than /storage? Now I am just ripping to /storage (which is small on my machine) and copying to my much bigger, usb-attached storage device which I have set up SBS to use. However, the resultant .m3u files are then wrong. Again, it would be easier to simply change the default ripping directory from within Vortexbox. I know I can hack it, but is there a more above-board way?
