Hi,
Any information you can share about Vortexbox being updated to Fedora 12?
Thanks,
We had lots of problems trying to get everybody to Fedora 11. So I think we will stay with 11 for now. I looked at the new features in 12 and I don't see anything that would help VortexBox.
You can try it yourself. It should work OK. Do you see any reason for us to upgrade?
I do
I have been fighting with wake on Lan issues.....
and after updating to Fedora 12 this works!
I havn´t until now noticed any issues after updating
Interesting. How did you upgrade? From command line or did you install a GUI.
I upgraded using comand line , info about how to do found on fedoraproject.org
Hi,
I have a data point, and a suggestion:
Data Point -
I tried to yum upgrade a vanilla Vortexbox (now at 1.0) to Fedora 12 and it gracefully failed. After sucessfully downloading the updates, the upgrade process reported that the "boot partion" (I can't remember the exact message) was too small and needed to be bigger to accomodate the update/replacement files. I didn't want to resize partitions and gave up.
Suggestion for Andrew -
Couple SqueezeboxServer 8.x release with upgrade of Vortexbox to nominally intall/upgrade to Fedora 12
Some rationale:
8.x will abandon MySql for Sql lite - time to purge MySql remnants
Fedora 12 has a more robust sound infrastructure - improvements in ALSA and pulse audio ( I have experienced better audio/less dropping/popping with a clean Fedora 12 install (sans Vortexbox) on the same hardware I use to run Vortexbox. We might be able to finally fix Squeezeslave problems.
Reports of more robust wake/sleep functionality in Fedora 12. May help reliability of WOL.
Just my two cents, from a happy Vortexbox user.
I tried to upgrade and ran into the same problem. I would like to go to Fedora 12 but seems like a bit of a nighmare for users.
Hi,
I can appreciate supporting paying customers who purchased Vortexbox because of its simplicity of use and management. Not everyone wants to tweak/configure and keeping users happy is very important.
However, in my limited experience Fedora 12 seems to offer advantages over 11, that may make Vortexbox even better.
Some thoughts:
1) Don't force 12 on those who are already happy.
2) Offer 12 with the proviso that it will require a fulll ISO rei-install
3) Provide a way to save both squeezeserver settings, and media files (flac, mp3 etc) onto external USB drive AND a way to restore settings and media files from that USB drive when upgrading Fedora (or any other restore/upgrade)
4) Change the Vortexbox partioning layout to allow for more room in boot partion to avoid upgrade issues in the future (hard drives/space are still getting cheaper - no reason to scrimp on space)
5) Tie Fedora Upgrade to 8.x release – that will hopefully aggregate bugs into one "session" and keep users happier
I'd be OK with the above scenario. I'd be pleased if anyone can offer a better solution.
The problem is once I upgrade my build machine to fedora 12 all new packages will be for 12 so there would be no more updates for Fedora 11. Basically anybody that wanted any new functionally would have to upgrade. Fedora 13 will be out in 5 months maybe they will have fixed the bug with upgrades by then.
What excatlly are the advantages of Fedora 12?
Andrew,
I believe that some of the advantages were posted above:
"Fedora 12 has a more robust sound infrastructure – improvements in ALSA and pulse audio . . . We might be able to finally fix Squeezeslave problems." ( I vote for that.)
Reports of more robust wake/sleep functionality in Fedora 12. May help reliability of WOL.
