Can you network the Vortex directly to a laptop via an ethernet cable? I don't have a cable/or modem connection to the internet...I connect wirelessly to the internet via my condos ISP provider with a username and pw.

You need to get a router that can operate in wireless bridge mode (should be less than $50). This will bridge your wireless Ethernet connection back to a hard Ethernet that VortexBox can use. Here is a article that will show you how to do this. There are other ways as well.
