    Vortexbox will not boot

Please help! I have been using my Vortexbox happily for over a year now. Recently, I disconnected it from my network. I reconnected it and... nothing, just a blinking cursor.

What should I do - bearing in mind that I know nothing about Linux OS?

Oops... just realised that this should probably be in Help, but hope you can forgive me.

Update: I just tried installing 2.1 from CD. It tells me "no disk found". Is this a hardware problem or something else?

Soudns like your hard drive may have failed. Go into the BIOS and see if it's listed.

No hard drive shows up in the BIOS so I guess it's failed :-(

Is it possible to use a USB drive as a boot disk or even replace the drive myself?

You can replace the drive and do a fresh install. I hope your data was backed up. You should only use a USB drive for backup not boot.

    Yes, it's backed-up :-)

I opened the casing, but couldn't see how to get at the disk. Are there instructions anywhere?

Btw why is the red light flashing if the drive doesn't work?

Hi, I just replaced my 1T drive with a WD red series (red series made for NAS) 3T so am fresh with how to. After removing top, I am assuming you did. You just take two screws out (next to the HD/DVD Player bracket alignement pins)at the front of the bracket after you snap off the face plate (ie pull up slighty on the front panel face plate plastic retainer tabs on top and pull the face plate out and a little down gently). Then you just slide the bracket forward with the handle. Before you move the assembly too far, Unhook the front panel wire connection from the mobo ( the harness runs along the bottom of the HD/DVDplayer bracket. Then tip the bracket over the back and rest it on something so you can take out the four HD screws. Really an easy task.

You know this but once back together before putting top back on that all the wiring connectors are on tight on mobo and drive/player

One additional thing. When I tried to install the ISO disc I had problems with a CD version on the VB and switched to a DVD and it worked. I have no idea why???

I just put a new HD into the Vortexbox Appliance using the instructions above. The CD ISO copy of 2.1 still cannot find the disk. I would very much appreciate your help. Anyone?

Btw I tried to copy the ISO file to DVD, but ISO Recorder 3.1 would not do it.

On rare occasions the drive controller will fail on a motherboard. You might consider sending this one in for service.

I wrote to Vortexbox UK a few weeks back, but they didn't answer. I live in Finland, so returning for service would be a major expense. I also assume the machine is out of warranty since it is about 18 months old.

    Any ideas?
