    Vortexbox isn't working right

    Hi,
Went on vacation, and had turned off the VB, unplugged all cords. Upon return, plugged everything in, turned on the power. But I can't access the VB. It doesn't appear on Windows Explorer where it formerly did. Accessing the servier takes me to the VB store. Accessing the LMS gives a site not found. I tried to turn off the VB with the power button, and it won't shut off.
I use a Windows 7 laptop as access. The VB was new in APril, and is running 2.0. I am not a linux guy.
How do I bring this back up?

    Chuck

If it will not turn off normally you might have to hard boot it by holding the power button a long time until it shuts down, then re-power. Not ideal but necessary sometimes.

Connect a monitor and keyboard to it and see if there is an error.

I don't have a monitor. Is there a way to directly connect a PC to achieve the same thing?

No you need to borrow a monitor and keyboard from a friend.

OK, monitor, keyboard, VB. Root:Vortexbox. Everything copacetic. Thank you once again, sir Andrew. What's the best windows driven shell type mechanism to access VB with if this should happen in the future?

    puTTY http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

OK, for no apparent reason, LMS, working fine through yesterday, died and is inaccessible. I tried rebooting VB from the Submit button, and VB went missing. A hard boot - one finger salute - restored neither. This is annoying - for no apparent reason these two apps died, and won't restart. Now I have to go borrow a monitor again, or learn to use puTTy on the fly. WHat's going on here?

    Either:

    • you have a hardware problem; or,
    • you have a software problem; or
    • your machine is running out of resources.

Of course, none of that helps you figure out what the actual problem is.

You need to get more (or at least, some) diagnostic information from the box. For a start, is there anything of interest recorded in /var/log/messages?

Durks: Thanks for a response. After getting a monitor and loging into VB, I got a permission denied msg when I tried /var/log/messages. I tried typing the direct url into my laptop (198.nnn.n.n), and that opened VB there, while http://vortexbox does not.

    VB Stats:
    Filesystem Size Used Available Use%
    /storage 1.8T 569G 1.2T 33%

VB is 2.0, Fedora is 16

    - Cached 33% 326.60 MB
    Disk Swap 0% 512.00 MB 0.00 KB 512.00 MB

Let me know what else to provide, and how to get it.
    Thx
    Chuck
