can you set it so that when the vortexbox boots up it always has the same IP address, minie regularly changes and I have to guess the address each time it does.

yes, go into the webGUI for controlling your vortexbox. click on "network configuration" icon on left. uncheck the dhcp and check the static ip box. then enter your info. for example, my router is 192.168.1.1, and starts handing out DhcP addresses at 192.168.1.100. So here's my VBA:

    IP: 192.168.1.15
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS: 192.168.1.1

then hit submit at the bottom of page. going forward this will always be your VB IP address.

    also see here:

lots of good info at the wiki, FAQ, etc.

Like suggested in the link if your router assigns IP addresses in the 100-149 range you should assign a static address from 2-99 or 150-253. You must however keep track of everything you assign so you don't re-assign a used number and create a conflict. Some routers have binding tables that allow you to reserve an address by specifying the address to reserve and the mac address of the device you want to receive this reserved IP. If you router has this feature use it even if the device itself is set static cuz now you have a look up table of all reservation that are bound or set static.
