    CD Ripping and Backup Problems

I'm a silver newbie at this and I'm as baffled as some of the users here. I run Vortexbox on a LivJuke 2Tb and after copying and backing up about a 1000 cds (so far) I noticed that the size to back up seemed quite large. When I came to check the flac files quite a few of the cds I'd ripped were missing even though I knew they'd been done - or seemed to have. Then I checked the Mp3 files and they were empty so no flac mirroring which is what I wanted. I then looked at the WAV files and found a load of cds stored as WAV which I'd never selected to do. It seems a haphazard selection so the WAV files weren't created each time for every cd. This explained the size of files to be backed up but not why. I've checked the settings and nothing seems to be wrong. It looks like I'll have to remove the WAV files from my backup hdd before it gets full before it's time. Any ideas would be welcomed.

You should check each CD when it is ripped to make sure it is ripped properly. If there are .wav files, that's an indication of a rip that failed to complete. Apparently you have ripped a large number of CDs without checking the results of each rip at rip time. This is not a wise strategy.

See http://info.vortexbox.org/tiki-index...+CD+Collection for tips on how to rip your CD collection the right way.

The backup procedure backs up everything in /storage to the USB backup drive. If .wav files are present from incomplete rips, they will be backed up. It's up to you to figure out why a particular CD failed to rip properly, and delete .wav files that you do not want.

Thanks Ron. I did start doing that at the beginning but my wife thought she was losing me! In the end I plumped for bulk rips especially as I have a lot of cds - probably more than the capacity of my unit if truth be told. But if I have to go back to sitting at the computer all my waking hours... Thanks again and I'll check out the link.

    Hi,

Since you have many disks to rip, you also might want to check this out.

I found that simple way to get your CDs right when you have a big quantity is the following:

    - Only activate the mp3 mirror option when you're finished with your bulk ripping. Ripping each CD will be much faster, about half the time. Then at night go to http://juke/flacmirror.php and click the start mp3 mirroring. These will convert the CDs you've inserted so far during the night.

    - When the CD is ejected, quickly check if the CD has all the songs there. If you have an iPhone/iPad/Android smartphone, you can launch the free Squeezebox app or if you have Sonos simply check if the music lists there. PM me if you'd like more details on how to configure this.

    - Give the CD a quick clean before inserting, this avoids a lot of problems with CDs not being properly ripped.

Check the WAV files to see which CDs didn't rip properly, so you can reinsert only those CDs.

    Hope this helps.

When i try to backup, the backup stops after one track of a CD and states that backup is complete. However, I have already ripped around 1300 CDs to the VB. Any suggestions? Thanks.
