update and backup errors - please help!

I'm stuck both updating and backing up. I would greatly appreciate any advice. When I try to upgrade the VB from the GUI (I'm running 1.10), I get the following error:

    Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Cleaning repos: atrpms fedora updates vortexbox
    Cleaning up Everything
0 delta-package files removed, by presto

    Trying other mirror.

I've tried rebooting, etc. I am also unable to run backup. I got the following message and don't know what to make of it. The backup drive is brand new. I've used it only twice. This is just the third backup attempt.

    06/07/2012 14:02:40 - Backup /storage to USB drive...

    $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0).
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
    for more details.

    See http://info.vortexbox.org/tiki-index...VB+1.10+Update and http://info.vortexbox.org/tiki-index.php?page=USBbackup

If you've reformatted the USB drive on your VB and still can't back up, consider backing up over your network using the VB Samba share, then upgrade your VB to VB 2.0.

Thanks, Ron. So you're suggesting I reformat the existing USB backup drive, rebackup everything and then upgrade to 2.0? What I don't understand is why it won't let me backup now. The drive is already formatted and has most of my library on it. I just wanted to backup the most recent additions. I did check to make sure the files on the backup drive are readable on my computer and they are. I can't detect any problem with the drive itself. So I'm stumped.

More help, sorry. I downloaded the ISO file and tried to check the md5 hash as instructed. I used the Terminal on my mac entering: md5 vortexbox-2.0.iso (and many variants) with no success; it kept coming up as "no such file or directory." Any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong?

You have to specify a path (or change directories) to the directory containing the ISO. For example, on OS X:
    Code:
    md5 ~/Downloads/vortexbox-2.0.iso
if you downloaded the ISO to the Downloads directory in your home folder.

THANKS! That worked. The help I found online did not mention that I need to specify the file path.

Ron, I took your advice, reformatted my backup USB drive, and backed up all the files. Whoops! 4 hours later, nothing there but a bunch of empty folders. Now I have no backup and I don't know what to do. You suggested backing up via Samba Share as an alternative. I can't find much info on how to do that. I downloaded Samba but I honestly can't figure out how to run it. This is getting really complicated. And worrisome. Why is the VB NOT backing up normally?

I am running OSX 10.6.8 by the way.

Just for fun, I tried rebacking up on the newly reformatted drive after the first failed attempt. I disconnected and reconnected it. Got the same error message. Can't mount the drive. I/O error. Am I completely screwed?

Try another backup drive; don't know why your current backup drive is not working.

You don't have to load Samba, just use the files share to copy files from the VB to your Mac if you want to back up that way.
