How to upgrade to or install VB 2.0 on systems with 512KB RAM?

What is the currently recommend procedure to upgrade to VB2.0 or install VB2.0 on a system with less than 512KB RAM (actually only 496 because of 16KB shared video)?

I have installed VB1.10 with only 192KB (256 - 64 shared video), but I recall VB2.0 needs at least 768KB (which is a wooping 4 times more!). As I did not upgrade while the Fedora 14 repository was still online, that option won't work anymore. Any ideas?

You can't. You need at least 768 MiB of RAM in order for the anaconda installer to work in Fedora 16 based systems (e.g. VortexBox 2.0). See https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US...Fedora_16.html

Fedora has fixed this issue for Fedora 17 (releasing this Tuesday), but it's likely Andrew won't take the time to upgrade VB with Fedora 17. So, you'll have to either

    a. buy more RAM,
    b. wait six months for Andrew to base VB on Fedora 18,
    c. or see if you can get the Alternative Upgrade to work while ATrpms is offline.

    Thanks for your reply.

    a. My system is unfortunately maxed out, I already upgraded from 256 to 512.
    b. VB 1.10 is working fine as it is, but I would like to play with some features that only seem to be available for 2.0 (f.i. Plex server).
    c. I am not that handy with Fedora, but I learned a lot since running VB!

Your best option is to keep running 1.10. Plex requires 1GB of RAM.

Am I able to install VB 2.1 on my system or does it still have the same memory requirements as 2.0?

No you should really have 2GB of RAM to run 2.1 and Plex although I may still work with 1GB.

I understand I will not able to run Plex on my limited hardware, but I hope to be able to update to a newer version of VB someday ...

As we add more features to VortexBox it will require more memory. We will never make a version that requires less memory then the previous version.

I was only referring to the amount of memory used by the Fedora installer. I had understand from another thread that the problem of Fedora 16 was solved in release 17.

VB 2.1 is still based on Fedora 16. You'll run into the same problems with Anaconda.

I've seen motherboard + CPU + RAM combos for <$100 on Newegg before though, so there's that route too.
