I am at a complete loss to make this work with Win 7 Home edition.
Inside the networking window VB shows up as a media player but not as a computer with Samba shares.
This is the most challenging problem I have faced with VB. Is there a solution?
Try this:
1. Click the Start button in the lower left corner and select Run... from the list on the right.
2. In the Run pop-up window, enter
e.g.Code:\\vortexbox-ip-address
on my network.Code:\\192.168.1.150
3. Then click OK.
4. You should get a Windows Explorer window with the VB Samba shares listed.
5. Note that you cannot just open Windows Explorer; you have to do it via the Run... menu to access the VB Samba shares.
you can also try hardmapping a drive to \\vortexbox-ip-address\files
I did this and then the network view of VB came back. I use the mapped drive though as it goes directly to the writeable files.

I have 2 laptops one with Win7 Home and another with Win7 Professional. Both see the server on the network. Check your router settings too, make sure the router has the server on its list and the server has a name there. If it doesn't, assign a name to the server on the router and, preferably, assign a static ip address. This should make the system visible on Windows.
I don't think the router is blocking connections because VB shows up in the media devices list on Win 7. I just can't see the file structure.
It's not a matter of the router blocking connections. I've seen some routers that don't play well with Linux and don't get the server name, just a Unknown followed by the MAC address. It's definitely something with your setup, as this works well with most users. The router is a well known culprit with this kind of problems. Worth taking a look in my opinion...
After trying all the suggestions in this thread and many other adjustments I found the cause.
The default network setting was to use "HomeGroup" login settings in Win7. That had to be changed to "User" to access SMB.
One little check mark and weeks of worry. Hope this helps someone else.
Interesting. I have my computer set to "HomeGroup" login and I can access SMB shares on all my VortexBoxes with no problems. As you mentioned this is the default setting so I think a lot of other VortexBox users would be having this problem if this was the cause. At any rate it's good to hear you have it working.
