XBMC would be a better choice, since Boxee does not want to support the mac/pc clients anymore.

Sorry Andrew - my post wasn't clear - I now have the Boxee Box (following earlier advice). Before my Vortexbox appliance arrives I have been playing with the Boxee Box and trying to access music and photo files from my Macbook Pro - only having achieved success with the former so far. The photos part being unsuccessful so far. Would it help if i load Boxee software onto the Macbook too? Tried sharing the photos from iphoto and also 'Lyn' without success - shows the jpegs on the Boxee Box but won't play them....

You have to understand what protocols are supported and being served from your Macbook, and what protocols are supported and served from VortexBox.

    • VortexBox broadcasts over Samba (SMB) and DLNA (UPnP).
    • OS X broadcasts over DAAP (older versions) and AFP.

Boxee Box can be configured to access files over DLNA, Samba, and AFP. Samba (SMB) is preferred between Boxee Box <--> VortexBox. You can configure OS X to share over Samba to mimic this of you want, as well as DLNA.

My advice: wait until your VBA arrives; you'll be surprised how well these two things work together to playback 1080p + 7.1 DTS on your home theatre system. You won't be disappointed.

Thank you divreg for the advice.
I will wait for the Vortexbox appliance to arrive as you recommend (it's now in Singapore at least - just got to sort out delivery this week)
in addition to music and video is it possible to store my photos on the Vortexbox appliance as well as it looks that might be a better solution if it links so well with Boxee Box where I'm having difficulty with the Boxee Box and the Mac?

    All photo formats work great.

Finally got the Vortexbox Player set up. After some fiddling around upgrading software, buying registration key for MKV, changing settings etc have the Boxee Box playing ripped DVD's and playing flac files directly from the Vortexbox to my Yamaha AVR using DNLA. All is great with both - interestingly, when I try the flac files via Boxee Box the sound is poor (relatively) to direct to the AVR from the Vortexbox, Any ideas why that would be when the audio on MKV movie files is great?

Also, what' the best way to get photo files onto the Vortexbox - the Macpro shared iphoto files (public folder) just won't play (the jpegs are listed) through the Boxee Box?
