DVD Ripping: Sound and Video not Synchronized

I am brand new to Vortexbox and just installed the system last night. I ripped a couple of DVD's and the first one I watched seemed to have synchronized sound and video but in the second file, sound and video are out of synch. I have not changed anything in the ripping configuaration- it's as it came out of the box just yesterday. Im streaming the video from the vortexbox to a Samsung wireless Blu Ray player which recognized the MKV files and seemed to play OK. A third DVD is also out of synch.

Can someone advise what could be causing this and how I can remedy? Thanks!

Make sure you are on the latest software. Go to http://vortexbox/upgrade.php to update. Some change have been made to the BluRay ripping script since VB 2.0 has been around.

Does you BluRay player have an option to adjust the audio/video synchronization by 0.1s ticks?

Also, since you're just starting, take a look at the beginners guide to VortexBox on the wiki: http://info.vortexbox.org/tiki-index.php?page=Begin

Thanks for the quick reply. I will check. I did re-rip a DVD and then "mirrored it" to MP4 and the result was horrible. The video was extremely jerky and lost a lot of data so I'm wondering if my MP4 ripping settings are OK too. Anyway, I will update my software and try again.

Another question....something I have been trying to understand. When I ripped the DVD to the MKV format and played it, I wasn't able to control streaming by (for example) fast forwarding. I don't know if this is feasible, but it struck me as a good thing to be able to do. Is this something that a streaming video player can do? If so, do I have to load this software (app) onto my Blu Ray player to accomplish this? Which software can do this?

Perhaps your Samsung player isn't handling playback very well. Can you test the playback on your computer? 1) copy the file to the computer and play it and/or 2) stream it over the Samba share.

Most players have an ability to control a DLNA stream (which is what I'm assuming you're using on the BD player) the same way as it would play a DVD. Choose subtitles, choose audio language, rewind/pause/stop/fastforward, chapter jumps, etc.

One more question: have you tried a downloaded video on it? To be legal, go to whitehouse.gov and grab the latest video of a press briefing or something (in mp4), transfer it to your VortexBox, and try to play it back with the BD player over DLNA. Here is a download link to try of this weeks press briefing: http://www.whitehouse.gov/WeeklyAddr...klyAddress.mp4 (right click, save link as).

I am not sure if there is an app you can install, might want to google that. Also, see if you can access the Samba shares (SMB) on VortexBox from the BD player, instead of using DLNA.

Take a look at VortexBox File Share Layout for more info about accessing the Samba shares.

Thanks for the good suggestions. How would I know if the streaming is done using DLNA?

I am almost certain it has it since you've been streaming to it, and that's one of the only ways VortexBox serves video--that, and via SMB. I would suggest finding out the Model Number and searching for the specs, or looking in the owners manual.

I have seen some weird players out there. Some works flawlessly and some have problems like yours does. Here are a few things you can try.

    1. Make sure your network is OK. Problems with your network can cause all kinds of playback problems.
    2. Download VLC (it's free) and play back the video on your computer. How does this look?
    3. try using HandBreak (it's free) to re-encode the mkv to h264. This is the native format of Blu-Ray so your Blu-Ray player might like this better.

The only player I have ever found that work will 100% of video files is Boxee Box. It also has an amazing user interface. If you are really serious about movies get one of these.

    Thanks for the feedback, Andrew

I re-ripped the DVD to MP4 and it played well on my PC. I'll download and try the VLC.
I'm not sure how I would load Handbreak onto my DVD player- can you offer a few suggestions?

You install on computer and use the program to re-encode the mkv file (this is not installed on dvd player itself)
