Lost all sound since soundcard install

When I get it working again, I really will stop tinkering, but:

I've just installed an M-Audio 2496 card, and now I can get no sound at all from the sound card or the on-board audio. I've checked Alsamixer, unmuted everything, and stored it. I've tried hw:0,0 hw:1,0 and hw:0,1 to no avail. I've just reloaded vb-player as well to resolve another issue. My settings are:

You need to use the output of "aplay -L" for the Vortexbox Player configuration page.
For example, here is the output on my vortexbox.

I use front:CARD=DG,DEV=0 for the analog output of my sound card, and iec958:CARD=DG,DEV=0 for the digital ouput.

Tried it and no luck. Tried all combination now and can't get a whisper from it.

Have you tried taking out the PCI soundcard and see if that fixes the issue? Maybe you have a bad soundcard.

Finally sorted! Left out the "DEV=0" and it worked.

Physically -how do you "use" the out put from aplay -L for the vortexbox player configuration page? I'm having similar problems just don't get it yet?
