    Can't login with original username

Well, my username "divreg" is six characters long, but the forum software won't let me login to that SN because it's less than six characters. When I would try to login, it said that I have used 6 out of 5 tries of typing my password. From this account, I can see that my profile for divreg is still there, I just can't get into it.

Can you lower the string count? I know some users use just four characters, too.

As it says in the big yellow message at the top you need to reset your password.

    1. Log in with your original user name and password
    2. You will get a message saying your user name is incorrect.
    3. Click on the click here where it says "Forgotten your password? Click here!"
    4. You will be prompted to reset your password.

    I did all of that.

    And what happened?

Ah, I think a cookie was preventing me from logging in even with a reset password. I followed those steps you listed in my normal browser and it didn't work.

I opened an incognito window and everything worked as illustrated, so I can now login to my original SN.

    Here's what worked for me:

    1. Login with your old user name and password.
    2. This will fail. Click the "Forgotten your password? Click here" link.
    3. Enter your email address and the 6-character image verification string.
    4. Click "Request Username / Password Now".
    5. A new password will be sent to your email address.
    6. Follow the link in the email and login with your new password.
    7. To change back to your old password: Click Settings, then click "Edit Email & Password".

The vbulletin message suggests that we should be able to login with our old user name and password, and then reset the password after logging on. If this is the case, it isn't working.

By trial and error, I discovered Ron's workflow which did work. However, if the vbulletin message is meant to highlight that you need to do a 'forgotten password' reset before logging in, then IMHO this isn't very clear.

The vBulletin message is confusing. I asked Andrew to fix it, but apparently its length is limited, and the 7-step process I used is too long for this message. Still, even with only two lines, the message could be clearer.

I hope people will read this thread and figure it out.
