    [SOLVED] reboot system time problems...

Today I did the weekly Upgrade of my VBA via the VortexBox GUI, and following the reboot, my monitor displayed the following:

    Booting 'Fedora (3.1.6-1.fc16.i686.PAE)'
    Loading Fedora (3.1.6-1.fc16.i686.PAE)
    Loading initial ramdisk...

Before upgrading to SW Version 2.0 and Fedora 16 a while back, I never saw this ramdisk message, but things have been going ok, so I figured it was not big deal.

Anyway, the process hung at the Loading initial ramdisk message for about 3 minutes, and then the monitor began to display a series of message like this:

    watchdog
    kthread
    kthread_worker
    kernel_thread_helper

These message scrolled on my monitor for about 10 minutes. The I "booted" the VBA by pulling the power plug and then plugging it back in.

The boot process worked ok in that I could access the VBA GUI and my Squeezebox Touch plays my music library just fine. Instead of the messages I used to see scrolling on my monitor during an Upgrade process, the message is now see is "Adjusting time..." while remains on my monitor indefinitely unless I log in.

This is the second time my VBA has hung at the Loading initial ramdisk message. The last time I pulled the plug, probably too quickly, and I ultimately found that I had to go into CMOS and set the correct system time before I could straighten things out.

Should I assume I have some kind of CMOS problem, and do you predict that battery replacement is now in order?

    Thanks.

Login to your VB and enter
    Code:
    hwclock; date
to show the Hardware Clock and the System Time.

If the System Time is off, you can correct it from the VB GUI System Configuration page by clicking the "Correct System Time" button.

The System Time and Hardware Clock should be the same.

If they are not, you can set the Hardware Clock to the current System Time by
    Code:
    hwclock -w
See man hwclock for other options.

Once you have the Hardware Clock and the System Time the same, you can check later to see if they have drifted by entering hwclock; date again. Any significant drift may indicate a CMOS battery problem.

    reboot system time problems...

    Hi Ron,

Hope you can help me too, because i've the same problem with the message adjusting time... This starts after the last updates by upgrade button of Vortexbox 2.0. First I have some hangs of the system but this was network related, and setting manual dhcp mode fixed this, before i never did.

To fix the earlier problems i did a clean install and on first boot the system was adjusting the time settings, i saw it was connecting to ntp server.

After installing all the updates the message appears on boot. So I checked the points mentioned in your post but hw time and system time are both correct. I also did a hwclock -w and a systemtime update to make sure everything was correct, but it didn't help.

It's not a big issue because system is working normal but it's a little strange why this happen. Hope you have a solution.

Don't worry about the "adjusting time" message. It is perfectly normal, and your VB is not hung, despite appearances. You'll see this message after every reboot. The confusion results from the fact that this message appears after the initial login prompt.

Hit the return/enter key and you'll get a second login prompt.

Since the first login prompt is still waiting for input, you could just enter root and hit return/enter, then enter the password and you'll be logged in.

Thanks Ron, for your quick reply.

    I will ignore the message.
