I installed VB 2.0 and it won't boot, HELP!!

Ok so I have two computers I have tried to install VortexBox on and on both of them after the install say "no boot device found". I have tried everything I know and I can't get the computers to boot from the Hard Drive. Both are Intel Core2Duo with Nvidia 8500 or 8600 GT cards in them and booted to windows just fine before I tried to install VB on them. I am sure I am doing something wrong please tell me what it is, I have been fighting this for 2 days.

What is the motherboard model?

There are known problems with installing VB 2.0/Fedora 16 on Intel D945GCLF motherboards.

You may have to use the partition editor parted to get the proper partition info on the hard drive. *Sorry, I can't give you any detailed help on this, since I don't know much about it.

Hi Ron, Thanks for the quick reply. *They are Intel ICH9 Boards. *One is a Niveus N4 the other is a Lifeware LMS300 so they are custom motherboards not standard off the shelf boards.

I am trying to install 1.10 right now to see if that is the case.

VB 1.10 runs on Fedora 14, which uses a different boot loader (GRUB) than Fedora 16 (GRUB 2).

So that may work.

It works, I am up and running with 1.10 and in the web interface on another computer. *From the link in the other thread the solution is to fdisk and then mark the PMBR as bootable. *I will try that tomorrow and post back. *It may be something that should be documented as it seems that this problem exists with a lot of Intel hardware.

UPDATE:

Ok I now have 2.0 installed and have booted to it. *What you need to do is after Vortexbox is loaded put in a boot disk and run a partition program and mark the partition as active. *This is what I used:

I downloaded the "Ultimate Boot CD"burned it to a DVD using "img burn" and booted to it. *Then I used the HDD tools menu option and scrolled down to MBRWork and loaded it. *Then option 6 is "Mark a partition as active" use it and choose partition 0 and you will see the partition chart up top updated to reflect the change. *You can then reboot and Vortexbox will boot from the HDD.


Question, when I first boot one of the first things I am presented with is:

vortexbox login: chown: invalid user: 'squeezeboxserver:squeezeboxserver'

What does this mean, do I need to do anything? *My intent on using vortexbox is to use the RTI driver for squeezeboxserver for Pandora and other streaming content.

Interesting. That partition should already be marked as active. Did you do a standard install of VortexBox or something special?

I did a standard install of vortexbox. *It is a known issue with Grub2 and certain Intel hardware from what I gather from the Fedora forums. *Ron sent me to the first thread that gave me a clue and I then put the rest of it together this morning. *Might be something you want to put in the documentation section. *If I can help let me know.

Off Topic: *I couldn't find it in a search and didn't want to start another thread. *Can vortexbox play wma lossless files? *I have about 300GB ripped to that format.
