    Vortexbox itunes

I have ripped a double CD into vortexbox and have a query re the way it is displayed in iTunes

    *

    1. can I alter the way the album is displayed as it is not sorted by disk 1 and disk 2

    *

    2. Is there any way to alter the genre shown in itunes

    *

    3. The* double album contained 15 tracks but there are also 16 other files showing in itunes, all called .temp, artist unknown, unknown album and unknown genre,* i navigated to the vortexbox itself and there is nothing shown in the file structure like this, what are they and how do i get rid of them?

    *

    4. Also i dont like the way there are underlines between all words, can I get rid of those or does Linux need them

It's hard to tell exactly what you are trying to do, so please provide a little more info.

What is the artist name and album name of the double CD?

Where are the album tracks stored for each CD (directory names)?

What is the Genre of these CDs?

How are you trying to play the tracks in iTunes? Using the VB DAAP server? Or mirroring the FLAC tracks to mp3 and adding the mp3s to iTunes?

Have you tried editing the tags in the tracks using a tag editor like mp3tag? This is the best way to fix issues like this. *You should add a DISCNUMBER tag to separate the tracks from the two CDs. *The first CD should have DISCNUMBER=1 and the second CD should have DISCNUMBER=2. Use the same album name for both CDs.

Hi Ron, thanks for the reply. the double album is this one

    *

The tracks are stored in the correct fodler on vortexbox ie music/flac, files/flac etc (cannot remember the exact paths) but there are only 4 root folders and they appear in there ok, when ripping this particular album it creates 2 directories, one for each CD, the names are something like this. delrium_odyssey_the_remix_collection and delrium_odyssey_the_remix_collection_1

    *

As I write this (at work) i cannot remember the exact genre that is registered for these, however disc 1 will show as a different genre to disc 2. (I can provide exact info on this once I get home.

    *

When I rip the CD I have to automatic mirroring to MP3 ticked (although in reality it doesnt automatically rip to MP3, I have to manually kick that process off), I do know that I pointed the directory to MP3 so the MP3s show in itunes rather than the WAV equivelant of the file although I may chnage this as I cannot load the playlists from that vortexbox share physically onto my iTouch.

    *

I have not heard of that application before, I will search now though and take it home to try.

    *

I guess what you have written explains or possibly explains a lot of my query bar all the temp files that appear listed in itunes, this is the only CD ripped so far so it is obviously generated by this CD, I wonder if I play the wav's via itunes this will disappear? I will experiement tonight.

    *

    thanks again.

You really need to edit these FLAC files with a tag editor like mp3tag: http://www.mp3tag.de/en. *That's the only way to make tags consistent and deal with not-so-perfect metadata that's retrieved (and used) at rip time.

You'll want to have both discs with the same Album Name (no disc number in the album name). Also the same Genre. *Set Discnumber=1 for the tracks in the first disc; and discnumber=2 for the tracks in the second disc. This is how I handle multiple-CD sets in my own music library.

When I rip the CD I have to automatic mirroring to MP3 ticked (although in reality it doesnt automatically rip to MP3, I have to manually kick that process off),

If you have automatic mp3 mirroring enabled, vortexbox should mirror the CD to mp3 when the rip to FLAC completes. If you select this option on the VB FLAC Mirror page, make sure to click Submit so VB will see the option setting.

I do know that I pointed the directory to MP3 so the MP3s show in itunes rather than the WAV equivelant of the file although I may change this as I cannot load the playlists from that vortexbox share physically onto my iTouch.

You should add the mirrored mp3s to iTunes one CD at a time, just adding the mp3 files and nothing else. This is the only way to ensure that extraneous files are not added to iTunes by mistake.

I have no idea what the temp file are. As I mentioned above, when you add tracks to the iTunes library, just add the mp3 files, not the entire album directory or the entire /files/music/mp3 directory. That way you won't have anything extraneous added to iTunes.

I‘ve downloaded that app and will crack on with renaming the files when I can. I will also reset the automatic mirroring to MP3 and click submit, I think I did that before though so wonder if it is a bug in the software of some sort.

    *

I don’t actually add the mirrored MP3 file to itunes, it is just that the files appear under the vortexbox share within the itunes application. The temp files I think are left over from vortexbox converting to FLAC files to MP3.

    *

However in saying that I will delete all the files I have there at the moment and starting again, I will do as you say and do 1 CD at a time and use that application to alter the file names and see how I go from there.

    Thanks again.

Use mp3tag to edit the TAGS within the FLAC files, not the NAMES of the FLAC files.

    See http://wiki.slimdevices.com/in.....To_Tagging

How would I edit the names of the FLAC files themselves should I need to? a tthe moment there are underscores between the names (or do they need to be there for linux?)

It's best to leave the underscores in the file names. The Linux standard is to have no embedded spaces in file names. It just makes things simpler in the Linux environment.

If you use Logitech Media Server, you will view your music based on the tags, not the file names.

If you add mirrored mp3 files to the iTunes library, you will view your music based on the tags, not the file names.

How are you playing the music that's stored on your VortexBox? Are you using VortexBox Player? Do you have a Logitech hardware player like the SqueezeBox Touch? Are you using Logitech Media Server?

If you want a LMS client that runs on Windows or a Mac, try SqueezePlay: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/in.....queezePlay

SqueezePlay should work better than using the VB DAAP server to play through iTunes.

The VB is connected to my network and I have my western digital media player see the VB media server and it plays through my surround sound kit.
