Thread: Suggestion... Photo gallery server

    Suggestion... Photo gallery server

Seeing as Vortexbox is great place to store photos, does anyone think a photo gallery server would be good?

Basically the idea is you would access vortexbox through the normal Web GUI, on the left-hand side there would be a Photo icon.

Clicking on this would re-direct you to another link e.g. http://vortexbox:1234

From here you could setup albums and organise your photos, these could then be accessed from any web browser on the LAN and the internet (once your router has been configured for port forwarding etc).

I am a keen photographer and something like this would be excellent, for sharing photos with family members without paying for extra storage space on sites like Flickr.

I'm no expert on the best software for this purpose, but Gallery seems to be quite popular:

When Vortexbox started providing video ripping I bought an AC Ryan Mini HD network media player to go with my Sony Bravia TV. *The Ryan box also does a reasonable slide show, so I added an extra folder called Pictures to my Vortexbox system. * Easy!

.... *Except that I've just re read your posting and *I now realise that the main thing you probably want is for your family & friends to look at your photos across the internet - a bit like using Subsonic. *Nice idea.

I would like to second the original post's request. *I'd love to be able to share the pictures of my daughter to the Grandmas and Grandpas.

It would be great if someone would install Gallery on their VB and report the results.

This will require some Linux skills. Is anyone up to try it?

I've managed to get this working on my VB, it wasn't too difficult to install.

I'm having major issues posting from both Windows (IE/Firefox) and my Mac (Safari), I keep getting the message "forum not set - unable to create post".

It's driving me mad, anyone know why I keep getting it?

    Any help would be appreciated.

The forum software is flaky. I've seen that too. Try logging out of the forum and logging back in.

    Glad you have Gallery working.

It would be great if you would add a wiki "How To" page for installing Gallery: http://info.vortexbox.org.

    Thanks!

I tried installing ZenPhoto but it wasn't as straight forward as Gallery2, haven't managed to get ZenPhoto working yet.*

It has now killed my Gallery2 site.

I need to use a test machine with a fresh build, to create some instructions.

When I get time I will do this.

    Hey mcdougc,

    *

Any chance that you might be able to put together Gallery2 instructions? *I'd take bullet points even, I just don't have a large enough working knowledge of linux to make a go of it without worry! * : )

    Apologies.

I now have a fresh VB build (not the beta as I had issues with it).

I'll install Gallery from scratch and do some documentation ASAP, last time it wasn't too difficult.** Zenphoto looked nicer but was harder to install.

I remember Gallery3 wasn't recognised as a package (using yum), only Gallery2.* I'm not very good with packages any ideas how I would get it added?
