VBP setup: sync alsa volume re-adjusting...

Hello Folks

I've been having some strangeness between VBP and alsa setup (volume).

After following the advice here:

And, raised the volume to -12db from something inaudible via alsamixer.

I restarted and found that VirtualBox Player had renamed to something like "Music Player Demon [plus the MAC address] and crashed my Squeezebox Radio.* Also, the sound card I had discovered to be hw:1,0 had changed position to hw:0,0 - so now Default.* I restarted again and after a while - and restarting the SB Radio - things seemed to sort themselves out re naming.

However, volume re-set to -41.5db.* So, I set it back to -12db on alsamixer.* Now, every so often the sync seems to drift to a just perceptible echo, the VBP will drop out, then the SB Radio will drop out, they'll both start up but the VBP will have reset volume back to -41.5db.

I've been trying to debug this listening to Bach's Goldberg Variations: it seems that the echo will become perceptible by about the end of a Variation; VBP will drop out just before the end; volume will reset; next Variation will start on SB Radio; SB Radio will drop out; then, both will come back - VBP with the new -41.5db alsa volume.

Any light anyone is able to shed would be much appreciated - I suspect I might have 2 problems pretending to be 1...

Are you running the latest VB software? If not, upgrade your system.

Also, be sure to run "alsactl store" after changing volume levels with alsamixer.

Are you trying to sync VortexBox Player with other players? This does not work very well
and should be avoided.

Yes, system is up to date and I followed your post re alsactl store, so yes did

that – it's what seemed to cause the initial problem.

But, I wonder – should I execute alsactl store in another terminal

before exiting alsamixer; last time I executed alsactl store I exited the

alsamixer first?

Yes, I am trying to sync VortexBox Player with other players.

That was my whole point of installing VB and moving to VBP over

SqueezeSlave – I thought VBP was intended to overcome the limitations of

SqueezeSlave when playing Internet streams in sync with other devices?

… Hmm, I've just been reading over some lists; perhaps I have my wires

crossed – is it SqueezeSlave that is recomended over VBP for maintaining sync?

If so, what's the point of VBP? Is there any intent to bring VBP up to

speed (so to speak) with sync'ing?

No. You can exit alsamixer, and then run alsactl store from the same terminal session.

There are numerous threads on this forum comparing VortexBox Player with

Squeezeslave. To reiterate:

Squeezeslave is a software music player that runs on VortexBox. It can play

through a sound card or a USB DAC. It is an alternative to VortexBox Player.

It provides the following features not available in VortexBox Player:

Gapless playback of FLAC files using SqueezeBox Server to control the player.
Synchronization with Logitech hardware players.
Limited to 16 bit / 44.1 kHz playback

VortexBox Player provides the following feature not available in Squeezeslave:

Playback of high-resolution music files (other than 16 bit/44.1 kHz)*
up to 24 bits/ 192 kHz

If you need high-resolution playback, use VortexBox Player.
If you need gapless FLAC playback with SBS and/or synchronization with Logitech

hardware players, use Squeezeslave.

Note: VortexBox Player will play FLAC files without gaps, but only when it

is controlled by mpd, not SqueezeBox Server.*See

I'm also having an issue with the alsa mixer resetting the PCM level inbetween
songs.* If I chnage the mixer value and then alsactl store**
it still reverts back to the low value.* How can I make this stick?

I think my alsa has recently reset again, and since I saved my alsa setting last time as
per the directions above I'm more confident it's not me stuffing up.
I wonder if yum update might cause a reset – are there any alsa files that are routinely
overwritten without an rpmsave?

Yup, this I can confirm as bug - except there's no bugzilla...
ALSA resets seemingly at random - I haven't done a yum update since last post. So, it's not that.
Any sluthing I can offer debugging I'm more than happy to offer.

The alsamixer volume levels are saved in /etc/asound.state when you enter

alsactl store

This file should not modified when you update the VB.

You can check the file size and modification time by

ls -l /etc/asound.state
