    Creating new m3u file after correcting filenames

    A few days in to using Vortexbox on an old system, I need to correct some information on ripped cd's (some are wrong, some are "unknown").

    I had thought to just re-name the files and folder names in a file explorer. "Unknown_Artist_-_Unknown_Album" then becomes "A_great_band_-_Amazing_Songs"; "01_Track_01" then gets renamed "01_Magnificent_Song".

    But, in order for my squeezebox to display all that, I need to change the m3u file also. I have tried Mp3tag, but the file comes out different than the Vortexbox file. Is this an issue?

    Should the file path be in the tag, as it is with Vortexbox? In that case, is there a way to have Vortexbox re-make the m3u file on the basis of my changes.

    Or, will the inclusion of the file path give me headaches when I move the collection somewhere else (say, copy them to another network location and play them from there)? In that case, should I re-make the m3u for all the flac files?

    SqueezeBox Server does not need the .m3u files to display tracks correctly; I suggest deleting all of them. You can disable generation of the .m3u playlists by setting

    playlist=0

    in /etc/ripit/config and restarting the Auto Ripper.

    You need to have SqueezeBox Server rescan your music library with the "clear library and rescan everything" option for it to see the files you've moved, assuming you've tagged them all properly.

    Thanks for that information! So, I need to change the tags within the flac files, is that right? In that case, I can just use Mp3tag to correct the tags for those files Vortexbox didn't get correct?

    And forget about the m3u files.

    Correct. Use mp3tag to fix all the tags (artist, album, track titiles).

    Yes. I've been running SBS for years without them, and it works just fine.

    Once you have moved the directories and files to get them where you want, and you've edited all the tags with mp3tag to get them to be what you want, have SBS "clear library and rescan everything". When the scan completes, SBS should see all of your changes.

    Magnificent, thank you!

    If it doesn't pose a problem, I will leave the m3u files in there "just in case". Not that they take up much space anyway :-).

    Fine. If you find a use for them, let me know.

    I sometimes use m3u file when listening to music on my laptop with VLC.
