Thread: help me re-do my system.

    help me re-do my system.

i have been thinking about re-configuring my current 2 channel system and could use some advice. my system currently consists of a vortexbox appliance (located upstairts) that streams to a squeezebox touch (downstairts). i would like to get everything located on the same rack downstairs. i would also like to be able to play whatever hi-rez files i want, up to 192/24. this necessitates getting rid of the touch for a more hi-rez capable machine. it would also mean no wireless streaming, the two would have to be hardwired together. so what would i need to connect the two? the appliance has a usb output. i have seen usb to spdif connectors that can do up to 192/24, the most popular being the m2tech hiface:

would this even work with a linux machine? would anything? is there any problems/concerns with playing hi-rez files off of the VB? thanx again for all the help.

The hiface dosn't work with VortexBox. You need something like this

Do you realize you will have giant gaps and dropouts between tracks

when you move to digital out?

At least your streaming box was gapless.

now i am confused. i thought that was the whole point behind going to a hardwired system was to minimize drop outs and increase file transfer rates ???

These are not bandwidth dropouts. This is a failure of the VB player to do gapless playback. You can Google gapless in this forum to get more info.

The core player MPD is currently gapless but something in VB player is still terribly flawed.

hifihere, your just pushing your own agenda here at the cost of confusing Ratso. Ratso did not ask about gapless playback. You could try to help him out instead of being a troll and spreading your misery around. Vortexbox does support gapless playback if you use an official mpd client and if you stream to Logitech devices with SBS. You say, "VB player is still terribly flawed" and your only support is that gapless does not work....come on you can do better that! YMMV......

Ratso, I can't tell if your using the analog or digital output of the squeezebox touch from your post, but any number of usb to analog dacs and usb to digital interfaces will do the trick if you move your Vortexbox to the main rack. If your unit is version 1.7 your good to go on compatible 24/192 usb devices.....

You are right that I am pushing an agenda to fix VB Player. At the same time I am warning Ratso that he will find a new problem that does not occur when he is streaming from his SB device. Have you ever tried to do what Ratso is proposing Stealthbomber?

You can't deny that VB Player is flawed. It has been well reported by Ron Olsen and others throughout this forum but never addressed by Andrew in the posts that I have read.

If Ratso is willing to put up with gaps in his music then he could build a VB with a built in SPDIF output. That would cost much less than buying a USB converter.

1- He can't stream 24/192 from a SB device which is curently playing back gapless.

2- He wants to connect digital out from his VB to playback 24/192.

3- He will discover a flaw in VB Player when he makes this change in his setup.

ratso, vortexbox supports gapless playback because it supports mpd. All you need is an iphone app called mpod. Also, apps running on computers like gnome for pc and osxmpd for mac will give gapless playback….

The onboard spdif outputs of motherboards may or may not play hi-res files properly and will most likekly not sound as good compared to your squeezebox touch….

There are no known "flaws" or bugs in VortexBox Player. VortexBox Player does not provide gapless playback. This is a feature that VortexBox Player does not have. We have never clamed to do Gapless Playback so this is not a bug.

Andrew, is there a possibility of making VB Player gapless in the future. Is there any interest in pursuing that?
