Classical CDs Always have the Wrong Artist

Just got a new VBA. Having a lot of fun, but one thing is really irritating me, and I want to try and clear it up before I dive in and have to undo everything.

What do I have to do to make the ripper work nicely with classical CDs? The problem is that they *always* come out with the Artist set to what I would call the Album (e.g. "Messa di Requiem"). I can reset them manually using SubSonic, but if I have to do that for every single CD I rip, I want there to be a better way.

Also, the fact that the Artist is wrong makes the track names nonsensical in Squeezebox as well, e.g. "Lux Aeterna by Requiem, Verdi". I know that track tagging for classical works is a massive PIA generally because the metadata is richer than the tag system designed for popular music, but does it have to be this bad? If I could just get the Artist right it would help a lot.

What would I have to do even to make the track names make sense? Manually rename the files on disk? Would that even work? I'd rather not really because if I rip the same CD again it's just going to put it in the wrong place again. But I am considering it because it just doesn't make sense to have 2CDs from a box set listed with different Artist and Album.

There is a lot if info regarding tags in these forums and unfortunately there is no single elegant solution. I have the same annoyances with a lot of CDs especially classical and have to constantly change tags and filenames. For that I'm using mp3tag (despite the name it does nice work on flac files as well). Or you can try dBpoweramp which reportedly does a better job with tags but it's not free.

    I share your pain!

I use dBpoweramp to manually tag every single rip. It seems to be the only way to guarantee that I have all the info I need in the order I need for my Squeezebox Touch to make any sense of it. Juts to get rid of track-embedded art is enough to justify the time and expense!
