    Miscellaneous questions

    Hi Andrew,

UPS tells me my VortexBox has arrived at their Warwick, RI depot so I expect it on Monday. In the meantime I'm trying to keep my self occupied--really looking forward to having it. VBG

Can you recommend a good beginner lunix book that I can learn from and then will serve as a reference for understanding your program. I don't intend or want to become a Lunix guru but I feel very uncomfortable using words like yum, rsnyc, etc. without some idea about how the whole thing works and the various options?

Next and maybe the reason for request #1 I bought a Ripserver just before the company went belly-up. It uses a EPIA-LN board with a VIA VT8237R Plus chip. If I understood your comment earlier in the forums the vortexbox program will not run on this processor even though the Ripserver program is in some form of Lunix. Hence my purchase of the Vortexbox. The question for you is do you see anyway I can converted this to use the VB program? Would I have to substitute an Atom borard? Any ideas? Please PM me if this is inappropriate for the board.

    Thanks, George

Fedora 10 is the linux version we are using on VortexBox I would get a book on that. There are some differences between linux variants so it is good to get one on Fedora. Many linux books concentrate on the linux Desktop not the command line so a command line book like this might be the best.

As for your ripserver that looks like it uses a VIA c7 chip. This is a i586 compatible chip so I don't think VorteBox will work on it. You may be able to replace the motherboard but you may have problems finding one that fits into such a small case.

This one might be good but there are no guarantees it will fit.

Thank you for your reply. You are right it is a C7 processor. Do you know why there is an incompatibility? Is it due to Lunix in general or is it a result of Fudora 10?

I guess the next question would be what happens if I tried to install VB? If it didn't work would there be some "permanent " harm done to the machine? Just your educated guess, I'll not hold you responsible! VBG.

I'll order the book, thanks for the recommendation. Jeez I'm going back to the old Kaypro/CPM days!

All modern processors are i686 compatible. i586 just uses a slightly different instruction set so it might not work. You can try it if you want. It would be good to know if I can help all those ripnas users that were left out when ripnas folded.

If you can use CPM you can use linux!
