    Disaster!

My homebrew server was not accessible this morning so I powered it off and on. I don't even see the bios screen I have reseated everything, checked the PSU outputs all to no avail.

My question is, if I go and buy another barebones incl. CPU and RAM, will I HAVE to let the VortexBox install wipe the contents of my hard drive? I made a back up a few months ago but here's stuff on there which isn't backed up.

    Hi,

    OK, basics.

Does the Power Supply Unit start up/fan?

If not then a new PSU may solve it.

    Has the main m/board failed?

You may find it reads the drive OK, then you can do a backup.

Ultimate Boot CD may help with testing the issue assuming you can get the PC to boot.

If the drive has died, well not a lot you can do.

    Disaster!

The CPU fan works and, as I said, I checked for 5 and 12v on all PSU outputs. Even when I disconnect everything from the mboard, I see no bios screen on the monitor when I reboot. I suspect the mboard.

What I want to know is, will I have to reformat my (hopefully) working hard drive when I get a replacement PC and install VortexBox? If so, I could get a fresh hard drive and use that but would I be able to also mount the existing drive to get stuff of it?

I have recovered a drive from a failed boot using UBCD and also just plugging the thing into a windows PC.

Its a bit of trial and error, its been a while since disk recover problems.

Worst, you have to copy the files of an external source.

Best you can get storage files back. This is not really a lot of help.

Try re-building on a another drive then load the old drive and copy the files.

    Try it out!

    Cheers,

Is the MB dead, or the HD ?

First, I'd try to move the HD (easier) to another PC and see what advents.

Take note that the /storage partition system is XFS or something like that, so it might be not readable in a windows environment.

If the MB will not post with no devices attached except a monitor then I would move to another MB.

As mentioned above using UBCD, BARTCD, MiniPE or any type of PE boot disc will do wonders for veiwing all types of drives and managing the content. You can easily do drive recovery and copies this way.

I managed to liberate an identical mobo from a PC at work and swapped it. Success

For some reason it won't find eth0 any more (and I've tried all the suggestions I found on here) but I've moved to eth1 and all is well.

    Thanks for the tips.

    Disaster!

I found that there had to be a live active ethernet connection to the MB at installation for eth0 to install.
