    Auto track volume?

Hi all. I have noticed when ripping tracks that the log mentions

    'Flac - replay gain - padding 8192.....'

Does this mean that the gain of the tracks is being altered as it rips to the drive?

If so, why does it do this and is there a way to stop it! I would like the music to be an exact copy of the CD.

    Many thanks, Steve

    Auto track volume?

    Steve,

My take on that is that the ripper is making space for parameters, the POTENTIAL gain adjustmentS that will be recorded in that location. One number will be for that track, and the other will be for the album as a whole. If, and only if, you allow the FLAC PLAYER to adjust the gain on playback, will the track volume or album volume be adjusted.

    Auto track volume?

Great thanks Dennis. I am new to all this and I didn't want to rip the many hundreds of CD's I have and then find I had done it wrong.

    cheers, Steve

    Hi Steve,

I suspect if you turn on the gain control, you will find that the output is identical to with it off, except that you won't have to run for the volume control. There is a "smart" mode in SBS that will determine if you are playing an album or a track. It will let the track-to-track volume differences remain throughout an album, and will keep the albums at approximately the same overall output level. When you play random tracks, it will keep the output level approximately the same for all tracks.

The control is in Settings on the Player Tab, in the Baisc Settings pulldown, Audio, Volume Adjustment/Replay Gain option. Hover over the "i" and a popup will provide an explanation.

Give it a try and judge what you hear.

    Have fun!

Thanks again Dennis, I will have a look. So far I think Vortexbox is great, I built a small Via PC for the job and stuck in a 2 Tb drive - so far so good!
