Hi there,

I recently installed VB0.9 on my server (clean install). I read about an update today regarding the burning of flac files to CD. I decided this could be handy so i tried to get this update.

I logged in using Putty, typed 'yum update' and all that happened was the following:

[vortexbox.localdomain ~]# yum update

Complete!

When i tried flac2cd.sh i didn't work. That was to be expected i think,

since the above didn't show anything regarding vortexbox or flac etc.

Also when trying the update using the webGUI nothing further was updated.

What am i doing wrong?

(ps : i also tried 'yum clean all'…no succes)

(pps : could it be that I lack some repository?

[vortexbox.localdomain yum.repos.d]# ls
atrpms.repo  fedora-rawhide.repo  fedora.repo  fedora-updates.repo  fedora-updates-testing.repo

The above are all the repo's i have in that directory. I'm quite a Linux-noob so any assistance is very welcome.)

The VortexBox package has the file you want. Run

 rpm -qa | grep vortexbox-0.9

and you should get

vortexbox-0.9-10.i586

What happens when you run flac2cd.sh?

I  get:

[vortexbox.localdomain yum.repos.d]# rpm -qa | grep vortexbox-0.9
vortexbox-0.9-8.i586

and:

[vortexbox.localdomain ~]# flac2cd.sh
-bash: flac2cd.sh: command not found

As you may have seen in my first post, the vortexbox RPM package is not beiing updated, and i don't seem to have a specific vortexbox repo…

Strange… and you tied the GUI as well? Can you try the GUI updater again?

I tried  and let it reboot. This is what it said

10/23/2009 00:49:14 - Starting upgrade. (This can take a long time...)Setting up Update ProcessNo Packages marked for Update10/23/2009 00:49:14 - Upgrade complete. Please reboot your VortexBox.

When i do: rpm -qa | grep vortexbox-0.9 it still gives me:

[vortexbox.localdomain ~]#  rpm -qa | grep vortexbox-0.9
vortexbox-0.9-8.i586

in a different thread i saw you posted the following info:

wget http://yum.vortexbox.org/relea…..5.i586.rpm

wget http://yum.vortexbox.org/relea…..noarch.rpm

rpm -Uvh vortexbox-0.9-5.i586.rpm vb-GUI-0.6-5.noarch.rpm

Should i try to run the above mentioned wget command but with the vortexbox-0.9-10.i586.rpm ?

I think i made some progress…

When i checked the directory Vortexbox on the 0.9 iso, i saw the package vortexbox-release-3-2.noarch.rpm. This package wasn't installed on my Vortexbox. I copied it to a directory on my Vortexbox, and the i did te following:

[vortexbox.localdomain ~]# sudo rpm -Uvh /storage/documents, eBooks/_utils/vortexbox-release-3-2.noarch.rpm    Preparing…                ########################################### [100%]
   1:vortexbox-release      ########################################### [100%]

then i did:

rpm -vql vortexbox-release-3-2
-rw-r–r–    1 root    root                      272 Jan 25  2009 /etc/yum.repos.d/vortexbox.repo

Apparently now the vortex.repo was installed in /etc/yum/yum.repos.d !

When i now check for updates, i get this:

[vortexbox.localdomain ~]# yum check-update

cpuspeed.i586                              1:1.5-12.fc11            updates
ripit.noarch                                   3.7.0-7                      vortexbox
squeezeboxserver.noarch             7.4.1-1                      vortexbox
vortexbox.i586                             0.9-10                       vortexbox

Is this the way i should have been in the first place?

Is it save to do yum update now? (and do i need to backup some config files from squeezeboxserver?)

This is strange the you had to install it manually. Squeezebox server should keeps it's config options when updating.

Well, I decided to take the plunge.

yum update

worked and gave me the new release of Squeezeboxserver (7.4.1) and the flac2cd.sh script as well.

I did yum update (on VB appliance) also.  Now My Music (on Squeezebox) no longer exists.  (Files seem to be there though as seen by my PC.  Help!

My entries under Favorites are gone too.

I tried that first (the 2 lines starting with cp).  The yum update gave an error.  I  ran yum update again.  It did not error the second time.  However the cp /tmp/…/squeezeboxserver/ said it did nothing (error). ran yum update again.  It said there was nothing to do.

Did reboot anyway.  And here we are.

I do believe the music is still on my hard drive.  But Squeezebox server ()http://192.168.1.9:9000/) only shows Internet Radio, Favorites, and Extras.

——————————

Discovered that Server Settings — Basic settings were all blank.  Seems like several paths should go here.  What are they?  Did I lose ALL the default settings?

I first backed up the SBS conf files. Then i stopped SBS:

services squeezeboxserver stop

Only then did i do:

yum update

After this was succesfully completed i copied back the SBS conf files and did a

reboot

When rebooted, SBS has retained my library and settings.

@ Andy: Maybe it should be mentioned in the 21 Oct 09 FLAC to CD post

on home-tab of this website that the update includes a new version of

Squeezeboxserver? And that people should back-up their settings?

Hi Andrew,

Looking at the previous posts, it appears risky to do an update to get SqueezeCenter Server v 7.4.1.

Thanks to PvdV and philg for going first and reporting the risks.

Please recommend detailed steps, suitable for Linux noobs like me, to take to ensure a successful Appliance update without the requirement to perform the troubleshooting tasks listed above.

As long as you have 7.4.x there should be no problem moving to another 7.4.x. If you upgrading from SqueezeCenter you need to move the files. The biggest problem with 7.3.x -> 7.4.x is Logitech changed the locations of all the config files.

Even you you don't move the config files over the worst you have to do is enter your music file location and your email address. You have to do this if you load SqueezeBox Server on Mac or Windows as well.

Update:

I issued the yum update from a remote session and everything went smoothly.

I added a reboot command when the process was complete.

I had changed my music file to "storage/music".  That location was preserved.

My favorites were aslo perserved.

Thanks for the handholding.
