Power/Shutdown options for server

Hi All

Am looking for opinions/options on power control for my server.

Initially I set-up and used the srvrpowernctrl plugin and it worked well, however now I have daily cronjobs which run so I turned off the plugin as I didn't want those jobs to be impacted if the players went idle.

Can anyone suggest a good approach for power control ? I would like the server to suspend during idle times however don't want the cron jobs (currently scheduled around midnight) to not run as the server is suspended. I'm not sure if there is anything out there that would fit my requirements or maybe I've missed a setting in srvrpowercntrl

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Ian,

In the bios for my motherboard there is an option to wake the machine at a certain time, if yours has the same option you could set the machine to wake at 23:45 for example, the cron jobs can run and then server power control can set it to standby again. Just make sure the idle time is long enough for the cron jobs to complete.

Hi Si,

Thanks for the reply.

My only concern is if one of the scripts take a long time, mainly the flac2mp3 script can take a while if there is a lot of flac files to convert.

My current thinking is to have the machine wake at 4am, with the idle switch-off parameter set to 2.5 hours, my alarm goes off during the week at 615 and I listen to music through to 8am, adding 2 1/2 hours to that would mean 6.5 hours from 4am for scripts to run …I'm thinking in the majority of time this would give enough time for the cronjobs to run.

2.5 hours is probably longer then I would have liked from an idle perspective however this way gives enough time to ensure jobs are running.

What do you think ?

Ian

ps not sure what to do on weekends :-) maybe I just set the cronjobs to run mon-fri

Hi Ian,

Sounds good. You could also try the End-of-day settings in the Server Power control plugin. The Squeezecenter devices (Boom, receiver etc) use WOL I believe before the alarm goes off to wake the server, you could set the daytime settings to be 6:15 to 12:15 to give you six hours to let the scripts run, or whatever time you think you need. Outside of this time the server could use a shorter idle period (eg 15mins) before the server is shutdown.

There is some sort of API that you can use with power control to make powerctl see the VortexBox as active even if all the players are off. I haven't figured out how it works yet.
