I haven't purchased the unit yet, but it looks great.

Can it be set to only rip to MP3 by default?

Yes, you can edit the ripit config file to create only mp3.

But, you should consider mirroring a lossless file format. It's a grand undertaking to rip your collection and you'll appreciate having a lossles (better sounding) library in the future.

Disk space is cheep, do the work once and make it future proof.

yea you will be happy you rip flac to start with and mirror the mp3 that way you can recreate your mps at better or less quality on the fly if needed.

if you are worried about hard drive space. I have 434 albums with 5174 songs

so far using 158 gb (flac and mp3 (190kb) mirror )
