Do you just connect both with the ethernet cable and that's it or do you have to connect the vortexbox to your router?
I want to use the vortexbox without using a computer if that is possible, so the idea is to access my music on the vortexbox solely via the squeezebox…
Thanks,
Sebastian

do you have to connect the vortexbox to your router? YES. You need for VortexBox to be able to access the Internet.
I want to use the vortexbox without using a computer No computer is required, although you will probably want to change some of the parameters or have SqueezeBox Server rescan your music, so occasional access to VortexBox via a web browser on a computer is a practical necessity.

Hi,
Using the touch purely as a screen seems a waste of the touch s capabilities.
An iphone/touch with ipeng would be better for that.
As per the previous post every now and then you may need to acess the box, for version upgrades, cover art fixes etc.
I have found that a laptop with 192.168.1.25 (i use static ip)& 192.168.1.25.9000 set as favourites make a quick and easy way to acess the vortexbox&squeezeserver.

You need a router – the touch is different in that it will scan your network looking for the vortexbox (it is looking for the server software).
To get the most out of the touch you need access to the internet, otherwise no plugins and updates.
You can choose static or dyanimic IP addresses – your choice. But plug both into your router and the Touch will do the rest. Older devices need a bit more help in selecting the server, gateway address, etc.
This also means that your server does not need to be near your touch! But the touch is next to your stereo.

you can use it without a router!
i have done this when i had a party at a friens place and i took one of my vortexboxes an my squeezebox touch from my office.
first setup a static ip on the vortexbox ,with subnet ect.
vb 192.168.1.20
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
then connect the squeezebox to a router with the ROUTERS DHCP SERVER TURNED OFF .
the squeezebox will ask you to enter the ip adresses maually. do this in the range of the vortexbox
sqz touch 192.168.1.10
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
turn on the dhcp server of the router, and you can connect to the vortexbox. when it is connected and you can see your music, you can put a normal ( no cross )cat5 cable between the vortexbox and the squeezebox touch.
this is what worked for me, maybe there is a better way but it did the trick!
good luck!

Thank you Kevin82 – this is what I'll do. Igot this thing to work and I did connect it to my router, however in daily use I plan to just connect it to my touch, where there is no router around so far!
I'm so glad it finally works like I hoped it would!!!
Best regards and wishes,

Wouldn't a 'cross-connect' ethernet cable, tying the two devices together work ( DHCP SERVER TURNED OFF) ? Just tell the Touch (or whatever) the VB IP address (fixed).

I highly recommend using a router even if it's not connected to the Internet. That way you will get DHCP, wireless, etc without anything special.
