I'm looking at the VBA as a possible option for my CD storage. I am presently using a Squeezebox Duet for getting music off computers or internet into my system, but in future, will change it when Logitech (or someone else) starts supporting hi-rez audio files. I believe the new Touch supports 24/96 and I would think they will probably go the full 24/192 within a couple of years. Does VBA support high resolutions? If not, are there plans for future support of hi rez files?
I've read support for mp3 and Flac files only. Are there plans to have non-compressed file support in future?
Thanks for any help

FLAC is a non compressed format. VortexBox will autorip CDs to FLAC at 44.1KHz an exact copy of the CD. If you have a 24/192 FLAC file you can put it on the VortexBox and it will serve it to the player.
There is currentlly no way to autorip a 24/192 file because there is no standard way to store this resolution music on CD or DVD. VortexBox will server any resolution file you put on it.

FLAC is a LOSSLESS format, but FLAC is compressed. FLAC compresses the data from a CD to approximatley 1/2 the size of the CD, based on the compression level the user selects. When a FLAC file is played, the processor reverses the compression process, and the output is EXACTLY as if it came from the CD.
Because FLAC files take less space, can also contain tags, like lyrics, and album art, they seem superior to the source CD to me. I can see only advantages to using FLAC for storing and playing music.

I have some hi-res CD's. So in order to take advantage of the higher resolution, based on what Andrew is saying above, would I have to use another ripping software and perhaps rip them to my PC and then transfer the higher res FLAC files to the VortexBox? Would that work?

There is a lot of discussion on the Slim Devices form on ripping HiRes CDs.

I trolled the slimdevices forums, but I still need someone to break this down for me. I understand Andrew's comments about there not being a standard for putting hi-res files on a CD or DVD.
But what was the answer on using something else (like EAC) to rip the files using a PC and then copying them to the VBA? Assuming you then have a renderer and DAC that can support hi-res, do you have it?
