I just migrated from Squeezebox to Sonos and am currently pointing to my old Slimserver library which is all MP3-320K. I am thinking of getting a VortexBox appliance and re-ripping to FLAC with an MP3 mirror. I understand that VortexBox makes 2 different folders for the two file types and I assume Sonos would be pointed to the FLAC folder.
My question is what to do with downloaded music files purchased on Amazon that will remain in MP3 format? Do I copy them to the FLAC folder so Sonos will see them? I assume I would not want Sonos to point to the MP3 mirror folder as that would index 2 of everything that I rip? I'm just having trouble picturing the file structure I would be using with a VortexBox serving Sonos.

Yes, put your mp3 files (that have no FLAC counterparts) in the FLAC subdirectory (or maybe their own subdirectory, but UNDER FLAC). FLAC/mp3files/….
see FAQ on adding exisitng music:

Thanks, that is clearer now. I see mention in the forums of "enabling" Sonos support somehow… is there a doc link that goes into more detail about that?

Don't see one but from a quick search of the forums here and at sonos forums, there are lots of discussions about using vortexbox. I don't think you have to do anything that special. Just point Sonos to the location of your server (vortexbox) and it seems to just work. But I don't have sonos, so speaking from ignorance here…. Probably want to start a new thread with "using with SONOS" in subject line so someone who knows can respond. Not likely to find your question in this thread.

I think there are only two actions required ,install the sonos web share software from the VB GUI and enable the 'top level' shares from the VB network page
