Best way to fix 'unknown albums'?

Basically a newb here-

I have a VB without any added services (people mention this and that service or program to retag or get the proper album covers for their tunes).

My collection has a few albums that are coming up 'unknown'.  I would be happy to retype the proper artisit, etc. but cannot figure out how to do this.

My collection also has a few CDs of random MP3s that I would like to rip so that the random songs end up in the proper artist channels.  (i.e. a live Foo Fighters song from the radio — I would like it to end up in the foo fighters artist channel and not listed under WKRP)

Finally, I'd like to figure out the easiest way to fix incorrect album covers.

Any help for the above is greatly appreciated.

thanks

sully

To fix the covers just name your cover "cover.jpg" and copy it to the folder with your album. To fix the tags you can use a tagging program on your PC or install SubSonic on your VortexBox through the VortexBox updater.

I have been having a some success with Picard.  The UI is really weird but the audio fingerprinting PUID feature is awesome. It basically scans the tracks to figure out which album they should belong to.
http://musicbrainz.org/doc/PicardTagger

Definiltey read the help. http://musicbrainz.org/doc/How…..ith_Picard

There are some preferences I recommend changing. One is to set the folder location to /Vortexbox(or your IP)/files/music/flac otherwise when Picard saves it will create the album folder inside the already exisiting one.
The second place is to change the save script to match vortexbox's settings. I did something similar to this (I will dbl-check tonight):
$replace(%albumartist%-_-%album%/$num(%tracknumber%,2) %title%, ,_)

This just tells Picard to put underscores between spaces and to add the "-_-" between the album and artist.

I also set it to not embed cover art into the FLAC file, and instead create the cover.jpg file but it has not been working properly.

I have been using http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ to do cleanup work.

In theory you should be able to get picard to run on vortexbox automatically but I just got mine two days ago.

Yeah Picard tagger works well. Although VortexBox uses the MusicBrainz database to get it's tags so the tags from Picard should be identical.

So I installed subsonic and it seems pretty sweet…I was able to change the names of the songs for an album, the artist, and the album title….as well as add tags…

however, when i use my SB controller it still says unknown artist, unknown album (though it gets the song name correct — when a song is playing it gets the album cover wrong, as well).

Do i have to use a different program to rename the files so that it is no longer saved under unknown_artist-unknown_album ?

You need to do a drop database and recan on your squeezebox. it's on the setting menu.

Is it best to load my MP3s first, or does it not matter?

it seems at least for me if you edit tags in subsonic it is not really changing the file names in the folder of that album…. I have 2 that I changed a while ago that the tracks show up right in subsonic but the music folder still is generic

it seems to be a subsonic problem maybe

I am using MP3TAG instead although I wish I could do it in subsonic and get it to work

you are not alone

p.s. I am glad I know math so I can post a reply glad I do not have to do grammer

Me 3! Laugh

The joys of linux.

For what its worth – I've tried:

using my smb share from my opensuse lappy to vortexbox – it seems to rename (when changing the name in the files directory) the directory name but not the 01_unknown_01.flac etc. Sure thats going to be a permissions problem.

Tried subsonic, the tags are good, but the file names and directories are still bad.

Logging onto the vortexbox, using gnome (don't ask), nautilus, that doesn't work, so tried opening a terminal, log on as root, but it didn't want to go into nautilus. Will try to use terminal tomorrow I guess.

Am I missing anything really obvious? Links gratefully recieved.

Damn those obscure albums…

I'm in the same boat here… have mostly very good success with VortexBox naming, however I have some strange ones…

Such as 2PAC and 2 Pac showing as different Artists.

So how do I fix the names, I've tried mp3tag and made sure they are all identical with no success on the SB Artists after a rescan.

Also, CD covers which are incorrect, I replace the tag and the folder with a folder.jpg of the correct cover and it keep reverting back to the wrong one, why?

All of this has been covered in other posts but I'll sum it up here.

1. to change cover art copy your cover art over the cover.jpg file in the flac directory

2. the names of the music files and the tags are different things. You can just use windows explorer to change the files names and mp3tag to change the id3 tags

3. After you get the ID3 tags the way you want do a "drop database and rescan" in the squeezeBox GUI to make everything right.

I have had several searches for album art retrieve a file as ".jpeg".
I had to change it to".jpg" or else it would keep adding strange
unwanted artwork.

and for me, with 'tricky' albums, I use Winamp which will search those difficult to find tracks.

If that fails or I dont like the results I use MP3 tags as mentioned many times before.

I'm new to this and struggling so would appreciate any help!

I have just installed a VortexBox Appliance – I assume thought that it works in the same way as VortexBox? Some issues that I have:

- I've edited tags in Subsonocic, rescanned and whilst album and track names now appear in Squeezebox  artists are still appearing as 'unknown artist' followed by the artist name. How do I get rid of the 'unknown artist'?

- I understand that file names and tags are different things but in Windows Explorer I cannot rename files. I get a message saying 'access is denied'

- I used Picard to retag 1 album. Now when I go into the /music/flac folder it says the location is unavailable. It is still in files/music/flac

I had read that the VortexBox was not that easy to use and seems that was right.

Just to add one thing: one can also rename directories and files with mp3tag ("Tag to Filename" or better yet with an "Action"). The only thing with this way is that cover files are not moved to the new directory Frown

My question on this which i've not noticed before is if i rip a cd and its unknown and i have MP3 mirroring turned on. I then end up with 4 versions of the unknown album surely in

Files/Music/Flac

Files/Music/MP3

Music/Flac

Music/MP3

If i want to then ammend the tags do i have to go and do this 4 times? Also i thought the Music/* folders were read only so how would i go about editing them?

You'd have to tag and rename files within these folders only:

Files/Music/Flac

Files/Music/MP3

As I understand it, if you tag something in "Files/Music/Flac/*" you're also tagging it in "Music/Flac/*" because it is in fact the same file but with a readonly mount point.
