Hi Acas
I have a laptop running linux that is my way 'in' to my vortexbox, I too have also found the speed for transferring between the laptop and the vortexbox to be slow, I've tried the following
- Samba
- nfs
- terminal session using ssh
I don't think this is a vortexbox restriction, more a restriction of the protocol.
Currently I don't have a requirement to transfer big amounts of data to/from the laptop, but in the past I copied over a large amount, best approach was to hook up a monitor/keyboard to the vortexbox and copy the data over via an external HDD, however this depends on your level of linux knowledge to do this in the vortexbox.
Can others suggest their best way of transferring data?

Hi acas,
I cannot suggest an improvement, but I do think it could be faster. I had to restore 307 GB of music to my VBA after it was necessary to rebuild VortexBox from the ISO CD. I did that 307 GB transfer from a Western Digital My Book USB-attached external hard drive attached to a Windows Vista PC over my local network. It required approximately 8 hours and had zero errors, so your 20 days is excessive.
I am unfamiliar with the "homeplug" that connects your Windows PC to your router.
I know that this post has no means to reduce the time, but at least you know it should be possible to get the music on the VortexBox in 5 hours or so.
I want to be able to attach the external USB drives directly to the VBA, which should further cut the time by not having to use the network.
I'm sure someone here will help get your music to the VortexBox faster.
Good luck.

homeplug is slow. Attach both your VortexBox and your computer to a wired network switch. Once the transfer is done you can go back to your old setup.
