View Full Version : Squeezecenter: cannot connect

Hi,
For the past few days, the squeezecenter installed on the VB appliance does not work. When I go to the 192.168.1.20:9000 page, I just get an error message saying it cannot connect to the remote server. Obviously, the squeezebox can't find the vortexbox or connect to it.
I tried doing many reboots, several updates (including an update after doing yum clean install), and I tried removing and re-installing squeezecenter, but nothing seems to have worked.
What should I do? How do I do that?
Thanks.

maybe try the set master browser command... see docs

Thanks for the suggestion.
I tried doing that by entering the command given in the documentation ("setup-smb-master"), but it tells me "-bash: setup-smb-master: command not found". Is there a typo somewhere? How else can I set the VB as the master browser?

I don't know if it's anything significant, but in case it can help understand what the problem is, here are two things.
1.
- I tried the command "service squeezecenter status" and got this:
squeezecenter-server is stopped
- When I type "service squeezecenter start," it first tells me:
Starting SqueezeCenter: Log4perl: Seems like no initialization happened. Forgot to call init ()?
- The next line that appears is
[date time] main::init (270) Starting SqueezeCenter (v7.3.3, r27044, Mon Jun 15 14:48:51 PDT 2009)
[OK]
- When I then check for status, it will tell me that squeezecenter is running, until I try to start squeezecenter from the web interface (192.168.X.XX:9000). If I then check the status it says it is stopped.
2.
I found this thread, in which someone describes the same problem on a Netgear ReadyNas: http://www.readynas.com/forum/.....mp;start=0 (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=20848&start=0). Someone else suggested installing this add-on, which seems to solve the problem: http://www.readynas.com/downlo.....er_0.1.bin (http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/3.01/CleanSlimServer_0.1.bin).
Is it possible that this could help me too? If so, how do I go about installing it?
Thanks.

can you get to the regular VortexBox web interface? located at...
http://vortexbox
Did you do anything to your system like load a BETA version of VeotexBox?

Thanks for answering.
Yes, I can access the regular interface; the VB appears on the network, and I can read files from it from other computers and the network.
And no, I didn't change anything on the system before it stopped working. I have since uninstalled and re-installed squeezecenter, but as far as I can tell, it wasn't a BETA version (I only did the "yum install squeezecenter" command).
If you have more suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated.

Seems like squeezecenter is really mucked up somehow. I have never seen this problem before. Try removing squeezecenter and reinstalling like this.
rpm -del squeezecenter
rm -rf /usr/share/squeezecenter
rm -rf /var/lib/squeezecenter
yum clean all
yum update
yum install squeezecenter
If this dosn't work I think you will need to reinstall VortexBox from scratch. Copy off all your FLAC files to your backup drive. Install VortexBox from the ISO and copy the FLAC files back.

Well, maybe I acted a bit too quickly, but the problem seems to be solved!
I was about to re-install vortexbox from scratch before I saw your reply, but I decided to try beta versions of squeezecenter first. Installing 7.3.4 didn't change anything, but 7.4 did the trick.
I read Moonbase's earlier post about installing 7.4 and I'm not sure that I did everything right, and I'm a little worried that using 7.4 may bring its own problems. But for now things seem to be working, so I'll wait to see if it stays that way. If not, I'll reinstall everything - and I might have more questions in the meantime...
Thanks again for your help.

Today I am unable to connect to my VBA via the webinterface. Tried the same IP address as has worked previoulsy, getting "cannot connect". Have also tried the regular vortex web interface: http://vortexbox/ with no result.
I haven't changed anything since the last time I successfully connected. I am able to connect to other web addresses no problem
Any thoughts?

Is the VortexBox appliance powered on? Can you play music from it? Can you try to power if off and then on?

you can also try hooking up a monitor and keyboard.
then you can see if the box has come to a login prompt and
what adress it has, tho that should not have changed.
also sometimes, the ethernet connection slips out slightly.
