Aloha,
*
I have a 5.1 home stereo system that I would like to listen to music from my VB appliance.* In reading the low cost theater instructions in documenation it says I need an Ipeng.* Is there any alternatives for the Ipeng?*

If you want to play directly from your VBA to your Home Theater AVR, you will need some way to control music playback.
This can be done using a laptop running the SqueezeBox Server web interface in a browser, or via a portable device, like an iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Android phone. A number of apps are available for these devices to control SqueezeBox Server players: iPeng, SqueezePad, Squeeze Commander, and the free Logitech Squeezebox app.
Another alternative is to buy a Logitech hardware player like the Squeezebox Touch player. Connect that to your Home Theater AVR, and control it via the touch screen or via its remote:

Using a Logitech hardware player has the advantage of not requiring the VBA to be placed next to the Home Theater AVR.

If you are playing the music direct from the the vortexbox, you could use an MPD (Music Player Daemon) client to control what is playing. There are clients for android (e.g. MPDroid) and for most other platforms.
I am looking for a decent control option that I can get working with the vortexbox and also other (UPnP-enabled) music playing devices. I'd like to find a UPnP control point / renderer for vortexbox but finding an MPD interface to my other gear.
