Hi,

Having convinced myself to purchase an Atom based system to run Vortexbox on I have a general question regarding software updates.

Does each build require a complete re-install or have I missed a trick somewhere ?

Apologies if this has been asked before.

regards

Nope, just run yum update to update to the latest version.

Andrew or Ron or anyone,

I have a new VBA. How do I run yum update?

Also, how do I know if my VBA has a sound card?

Thanks, J

To update your appliance you can click on upgrade in the web GUI. Did you purchase a VortexBox appliance?

Congrats on your new VBA!

The best way to update is to use the VortexBox GUI:

1. In a web browser on another computer in your network, go to http://vortexbox.

2. At the bottom left side of the page, you'll see an icon that looks like a cardboard box. Click on it to bring up the Upgrade page.

3. Click on the "Start Upgrade" button. *This will upgrade your VBA to the latest software.

To upgrade from the command line (which you should only have to do to solve problems):

1. Login to your VBA; see*http://info.vortexbox.org/tiki-index.php?page=Login

2. Enter

yum clean all; yum update

This will update your VBA to the latest software (same outcome as clicking the "Start Upgrade" button in the VB GUI).

All VBAs have sound cards. *Look at the back to find the colored audio jacks. The green jack is the center audio out. *You can plug powered speakers into this jack and play music using VortexBox Player, the software music player that's part of the VortexBox package.

See*http://vortexbox.org/documentation/vortexbox-player/.

VortexBox Player is set up from the VB GUI web page; look for the icon on the lower left that looks like a loudspeaker (just above the cardboard box icon). Click on that icon, then click the "Submit" button to configure your VortexBox Player, which should now appear in the player list in the SqueezeBox Server web page (http://vortexbox:9000).

You can also get to the SBS web page from the VB GUI; click the loudspeaker icon that's second down from the top.

Thanks, J

Have fun with your new VBA and post if you have more questions.

Thanks Ron, I am now upgraded and playing smooth jazz on my audioengine 5s out the back of my VBA. Sounds great.

There seems to be a lot to learn about this area of enjoyment and I am*grateful*to have access to helpful support! Many thanks!, Jud
