Hi,

i'm trying to rip some cd's to my vortexbox machine, but all it does is giving me error messages like “Buffer I/O error on device sr0″ and “end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0″. The drive doesn't spin up, and the cd's I've tried vary from old to brand new.

Please advice…

Sounds like it might be a hardware problem with your CD drive. What type of CD drive is it?

And me too....
I've seen the "Buffer I/O error on device sr0" errorr messages as well..

Reboot seems to make it go away. I'm wondering if it's dirty CD's?

Brand new box: Foxconn 45CS atom board with Sony AD7590s slim DVD connected via Sata, 512 MB RAM.
Also, looking at the stats the RAM is regularly at 99% (red). Is that normal?

Matt

It's a 5 1/4 dvd-rom player from I think pioneer. I've reset some stuff, did a new installation, and now it's working. Could've been a bios problem as well, I don't know. Might be still getting these errors, but haven't been paying specific attention to them (since it's working now).

Yes, that's normal. Linux uses all your ram for programs AND caching, you only need to check your swap, if that's being used (a lot), you might consider upgrading your memory.

VortexBox uses very little memory compared to other systems. I have 512mb on my development system and I have never seen it swap. It was running fine even with 5 music streams, two of them transcoding.

This message pops up sometime when the auto ripper is first reading the disk. It should be harmless.

eventually got VB 2.1 instaaled on Asus P5Bmb
have updated system
have pasted in key for MakeMKV in manage licences
still getting Buffer i/o error on device sr0 sectorxxxx etyc
Google seems to suggest a component of MkV is missing

Is this true-how do I rectify this so I can rip DVD's???

Many thanks everyone!!!
