This sounds really interesting, yet I don't fully understand, what VortexBox is.

I understand it's a Fedora distribution to setup a server that can automatically rip and store CDs.

What Software is used to do that? Is that special VortexBox SW?

Which server platforms do you support, I understand SqueezeCenter, also others?

How are those managed? How do you interface between the ripping and playback features?

Is there a management interface or do you have to use a command line? If yes, is it extensible?

I cannot seem to find this kind of details, do they exist?

This really sounds cool, if it only was based on Ubuntu...

The best way to answer all your questions is to download VortexBox and try it! I'll try to answer a few of your questions. VortexBox uses perl scripts to rip the CDs to FLAC and MP3.

The managment is done by SqueezeCenter. All of the files are avalible on a SMB share if you want to say change an ID3 tage or something. It's linux so you can use the command line also if you want but this is not required.

VoretxBox is really very simple so not to many details are required. As for the OS If I had based VortexBox on Debian sobody would ask for RedHat for BSD. :)

Hm, “just try” meand installing it on a machine. Don't have dozens around here that I don't need.

OK, I'll set up a VM and try… maybe after the holidays…

Are these your own scripts? Are they open source?

The debian comment wasn't to be taken seriously. I just moved all my Linux machines to Ubuntu...
